By US · Comments (0)
Thursday, February 4th, 2010

This client’s request was for a new website. The client had never had a website before. They were expanding into and starting their own realty business and decided that it was time to include the power of the internet.

This site has a clean and professional business look to it. We used a 2 column layout with an attractive header to let visitors know that this is a professional company. The clients were very specific in what content they wanted on their home page, including the mortgage estimator. Providing US the content made this site’s construction very fast and allowed for the customer’s site to be completed well ahead of schedule.

Specific options that were added to this site were:

  • downloadable pdf form
  • online maintenance request form
  • online contact us form
  • mortgage estimator
  • links to off site resources
  • custom buttons

T

This site was a re-build of an existing site.

Our client changed hosting companies and during the switch requested a new and fresh look for his real estate flipping business.

This particular client is more of a Do-It-Yourself’er and makes his own changes, additions and deletions, as desired. When he runs out of time, gets stuck or simply does not want to do the work, he calls US.

In addition, this client took advantage of our monthly maintenance upgrades. We maintain the clients files on a regular basis and make any required updates to the WordPress version, his theme or any installed plugins. The updates ensure that this client has the most stable and current version of WordPress, keeping his site secure and up to date.

Some of the additional things that someone may choose to add to this might be changing the colors and font styles and adding images. The theme layout has a number of included options available that are easily accessed by even the most computer challenged beginner. And if one were to become stumped, just call US. We will always point you in the direction to find what you need until your issue is resolved or you determine that it is beyond what you prefer to attempt. When we do custom work for your site, you can be sure that you will receive personal one-on-one attention and get a price that you feel is fair. The choice is always yours – after all, it IS your site.

Portfolio: The Best Christmas Lights

By US · Comments (0)

W

Walter is a client who has absolutely no website or internet experience. Walter is like a lot of self employed business owners whose business is a service. In Walter’s case, his business is a seasonal Christmas Light installation. When Walter came by this year, we offered to build him a site and all he had to was give us an email to have his customers request his service. We explained to him the significance of having an online presence in today’s business world. Walter conceded but only on a trial basis.

The response that Walter got was incredible. He gained 3 times the clientele he had from last year. At one point had to start turning new accounts away. He ended up advertising for additional help.

Walter’s site more than paid for itself after he had added just one new account to his business and he will be able to service that customer again next Christmas.

Realizing the value, Walter requested additional sites for his other seasonal service businesses. Those sites have proven to as valuable and Walter no longer needs to be convinced of the importance of having an online presence.

The Site Building Process

By Guest Author
Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

The process begins with you buying a domain name. This is something you can do on your own or we can do it for you. Pros and cons of each will be discussed in the Domains area in TLC.

Then you will need a server to host your domain. We have hosting options through US, or you can do that yourself out side of the US site. Free installation is provided to any new accounts hosting with or through US with one of our hosting partners.

Once you have hosting, then we install the site. We collect your site details in a basic form and then install the site using the WordPress platform. Basic WordPress instruction is then provided on how to use WordPress using our demo site or your newly created site.

At this point your site is an empty site, kind of like templates and you have back end access for you to add whatever you want. Many clients that want to build and maintain their own sites stop their process here and we encourage this as well. But here, with US, we do offer more.

The process up to this point can take anywhere from 24- 72 hours to depending on the workload on US. Our goal is to get sites back for people to use and add their content within 24 hours. The cost to this point is also minimal. So far, only domain and hosting costs, which comparatively, are low across the board and anyone who has a site must pay something for.

Site organization and function is the next step. How many and what kinds of pages, blog, forum, e-commerce, static, dynamic, etc. you want and need. We have many clients who don’t know exactly how they want their site to function.

Once a client does know what they want, they can return for our educational materials (we offer free and paid educational materials) to help them understand how to build it. Or if they don’t want to do it themselves or simply don’t have time, you can pay US for this service. We will coordinate with you and determine your needs. Costs here are usually a rate determined on size, need and how long we estimate it will take US to complete.

If you want US to fill your site with your site’s information (content) we provide that service as well. This can take time and/or money depending on amount of information and any custom changes needed. Custom work is very time consuming. There is typically a minimum charge plus an hourly rate for this and when working with US, we always let you know an estimate ahead of time. What we do, or don’t do, is always up to you.

The last step is site maintenance. What most clients forget to consider is their site maintenance. Sites are not meant to build, set and forget. To reap the benefits (increased traffic and increased conversions) from a site you must maintain it. Depending on the type of website or blog you have determines how much or little maintenance you will need. At a minimum, we suggest checking for updates every month. Preventative maintenance is typically much less expensive and keeps your site more secure.

Hope this helps. And if you would like, feel free to contact US.

WordPress 2.8.5 Released

By US · Comments (0)
Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

The latest and greatest version of WordPress (Version 2.8.5) has been released. We cannot express enough how important keeping up with these changes are. Please do not ignore site maintenance.

You may be thinking that these changes reflect how vulnerable WordPress is, in reality it is just the opposite. All sites have a measure of risk regarding security – it is never a matter of “if” you will have a security breach, but rather “when” your will be breached. Because WordPress uses open source and their experts are continually making improvements, risks are more likely to be discovered prior to an actual security breach. Visit Step 6: Site Maintenance for additional maintenance and upgrade information from US.

Below are some excerpts form their release notice:

As you know over the past couple of months we have been working on the new features for WordPress 2.9. We have also been working on trying to make WordPress as secure as possible and during this process we have identified a number of security hardening changes that we thought were worth back-porting to the 2.8 branch so as to get these improvements out there and make all your sites as secure as possible.

We would recommend that all sites are upgraded to this new version of WordPress to ensure that you have the best available protection.

Keep Your WordPress Website Secure

By US · Comments (0)
Sunday, September 6th, 2009

The following information was released by WordPress.org on Sept. 5, 2009.

A stitch in time saves nine. I couldn’t sew my way out of a bag, but it’s true advice for bloggers as well — a little bit of work on an upgrade now saves a lot of work fixing something later.

Right now there is a worm making its way around old, unpatched versions of WordPress. This particular worm, like many before it, is clever: it registers a user, uses a security bug (fixed earlier in the year) to allow evaluated code to be executed through the permalink structure, makes itself an admin, then uses JavaScript to hide itself when you look at users page, attempts to clean up after itself, then goes quiet so you never notice while it inserts hidden spam and malware into your old posts.

2.8.4, the current version of WordPress, is immune to this worm. (So was the release before this one.) If you’ve been thinking about upgrading but haven’t gotten around to it yet, now would be a really good time. If you’ve already upgraded your blogs, maybe check out the blogs of your friends or that you read and see if they need any help. A stitch in time saves nine.

The tactics are new, but the strategy is not. Where this particular worm messes up is in the “clean up” phase: it doesn’t hide itself well and the blogger notices that all his links are broken, which causes him to dig deeper and notice the extent of the damage. Where worms of old would do childish things like defacing your site, the new ones are silent and invisible, so you only notice them when they screw up (as this one did) or your site gets removed from Google for having spam and malware on it.

I’m talking about this not to scare you, but to highlight that this is something that has happened before, and that will more than likely happen again.

A stitch in time saves nine. Upgrading is a known quantity of work, and one that the WordPress community has tried its darndest to make as easy as possible with one-click upgrades. Fixing a hacked blog, on the other hand, is quite hard. Upgrading is taking your vitamins; fixing a hack is open heart surgery. (This is true of cost, as well.)

The Ultimate Solution installs the most current version of WordPress with our FREE professional WordPress installation . Once our installation is complete, it is up to you to maintain and keep your WordPress website udgraded.

When you log into your WordPress admin area, there will be alerts that tell you when the WordPress publishing system, Plugins or Themes have been changed and when your website is in need of being upgraded. The links within the WordPress.org article will lead you to the explanation of how to upgrade yourself as well as how to fix your site if it has become compromised. Doing the work yourself is always FREE.

We have many clients that are just not interested in doing this type of work themselves or simply don’t have the time. The Ultimate Solution Maintenance Upgrade service  is available to both new and existing clients. Please visit Maintenance Upgrades for pricing and details.

The entire WordPress.org release can be accessed at How to Keep WordPress Secure.
