I have noticed some of the registrars list the number of “subdomains” available. Is a subdomain for example like http://www.whatever.com/forum whereas the root domain would be just http://www.whatever.com or are subdomains different?
You are close, but not quite. Your are correct with your example regarding the root level domain.
In your example using http://www.whatever.com/forum, the forum is simply a folder or area within the main domain and functions within the main domain.
However, a sub domain would be http://www.subdomain.whatever.com and is set up as an entirely different set of files that work independently from the main domain of whatever.com.
